General Podiatry

Common Foot Conditions
Corns and calluses
Corns and calluses are thickened skin caused by friction or pressure. Regular podiatry visits can safely reduce discomfort and prevent these painful areas from worsening.
Bunions and hammertoes
Bunions are bony bumps forming at the base of the big toe, caused by bone misalignment. Hammertoes occur when toe joints bend abnormally, creating a hammer-like shape and often causing discomfort or pain.
Nail disorders
These include fungal nail infections and ingrown toenails, where the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection that requires professional podiatry care.
Diabetes
Diabetes affects how your body uses blood sugar, potentially damaging nerves and reducing blood flow to your feet. Regular podiatry care can help to detect early signs of changes in sensitivity and circulation which may lead to diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, as well as protecting against the effects of diabetes, such as ulcers.
Arthritis
Arthritis causes joint inflammation, swelling, and damage in the feet’s 33 joints. Podiatrists may suggest physiotherapy, supportive footwear, or custom inserts to relieve pain and improve mobility.
Foot or heel pain
Heel pain can be caused by conditions including plantar fasciitis, ‘policeman’s heel’ and Achilles tendinitis. These can result from over-pronation, excessively high arches, activities such as running, poor footwear, or excess weight. Orthotic insoles can help relieve symptoms of many of these conditions.
Sports injuries
A podiatrist can treat a range of sport-related injuries resulting from overuse, e.g. shin splints, Osgood Schlatter disease and Achilles tendinitis. Use of bespoke orthotic insoles can help relieve these and provide protection from stress fractures in metatarsals.”
Morton’s Neuroma
Morton’s Neuroma occurs when a nerve between the third and fourth toes becomes irritated, causing pain, burning, or a sensation of something in your shoe. Common in runners, it’s worsened by tight footwear or overpronation. Podiatrists may prescribe orthotic insoles to relieve pressure and prevent further irritation by stabilising the overly mobile forefoot responsible for the condition.

A biomechanical assessment identifies causes of pain and disability by analysing the alignments, movement and response to loading of your feet and lower limbs.

Evaluation of misalignments, asymmetries and instabilities
Evaluation of foot type and flexibility, evidence of forefoot instability, forefoot and rearfoot alignments when standing and walking, and asymmetries which may place added strain on other parts of your body, and contribute to pain, imbalance and injury risks.
Observational gait analysis
Your gait will be observed and video-recorded to identify irregular or compensatory movements. Video analysis helps assess pronation, propulsion, and the underlying causes of pain or injury.
Static and dynamic assessments
You may be assessed while standing, walking, or carrying out specific movements, depending on your symptoms, to help identify the factors contributing to your discomfort or injury.
Sports/Runner's biomechanics
For athletes, biomechanical assessments analyse movement and technique to enhance performance, improve efficiency, and reduce the risk of injury by identifying areas that need support or correction.
Examination of the lower limbs
Your gait will be observed and video-recorded to identify irregular or compensatory movements. Video analysis helps assess pronation, propulsion, and the underlying causes of pain or injury.

Children may develop foot or gait issues; podiatrists help identify problems and support treatments to keep them active.
Common Foot Disorders in Children
Heel pain or Sever's Disease
Sever’s Disease is caused by inflammation of the heel growth plate from repetitive stress. Early treatment helps children stay active and prevents long-term issues.
Ingrown toenails
Ingrown toenails are common in children and often painful; proper nail cutting helps, but recurring cases should be assessed to identify underlying causes.
Fungal nail Infections
Fungal nail infections occur where nails have been damaged, often by sports such as running and football. They appear as thick, brittle, yellow or distorted nails
Plantar warts (Verrucae)
Warts and verrucae are rough skin growths caused by a viral infection, commonly seen in children and teenagers, and often caught initially from others in warm, damp places such as shared wet areas like pools and showers.
Bunions
Children can develop bunions due to inherited foot bone structure or overly flexible feet combined with footwear lacking arch support. These can cause joint misalignment, often combined with or preceded by curling smaller toes.
Flat feet
Some children have naturally low arches, but arches that flatten when standing or walking – especially with pain – should be assessed. Early biomechanical therapy can support alignment while the feet are still developing.
In-toeing (Pigeon Toeing) or Out-toeing
When children start walking, their toes may turn in or out. This often improves naturally as they grow, but if it continues beyond age five, a podiatry assessment is recommended.
Growing pains
Children’s feet and legs develop constantly, and growing pains are common after activity. Pain may also stem from tight muscles or hypermobility. If discomfort persists, a podiatrist can assess their feet, ankles, and gait to identify and address any underlying issues.
Shoes
Properly fitted shoes are essential for healthy foot development, so children should be measured before each new pair. Many adult foot problems stem from unsuitable childhood footwear. A podiatrist can guide you on choosing the most appropriate shoes for your child.

MEDICAL
Verrucae
Warts and verrucae are small, rough skin growths caused by a viral infection, commonly seen in children and teenagers. Some resolve naturally, but persistent or painful ones may need treatment. We offer options such as cryotherapy, silver nitrate, Verrutop®, Swift therapy, and dry needling.
Treatments for Verrucae and Warts
Silver Nitrate
Silver nitrate is applied to the skin, may briefly sting, can stain temporarily, and is suitable for all ages.
Cryopen
Cryopen freezes verrucae with precise liquid nitrous oxide bursts, usually requiring multiple sessions.
Verrutop
Verrutop is a painless topical treatment that dries out verrucae and warts, causing them to detach. Suitable for adults and children over six.
Swift microwave therapy
Swift uses targeted microwaves to destroy verrucae tissue and trigger an immune response. It’s precise, non-invasive, repeated monthly, and unsuitable for young children.
Dry needling
Dry needling uses a sterile needle under local anaesthetic to puncture verruca tissue, triggering an immune response that clears the virus. It’s suitable for teens and adults and often works within one or two sessions.
MEDICAL
Ingrown Toenail
Ingrown toenails develop when the nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, swelling, and possible infection. They most often affect the big toe but can occur on any toe. Early treatment helps relieve discomfort and prevent the problem from worsening.

Causes of ingrown toenails
Ingrown toenails can result from inherited foot shape or gait issues, improper nail cutting, brittle or broken nails, and pressure from tight footwear or moist skin. While soothing foot baths may help, persistent cases often require professional treatment from a podiatrist.
Types of nail surgery
Basic ingrown toenails may only require removing the offending nail edge and applying an antiseptic dressing. More painful cases are treated under local anaesthetic. Recurrent or severe problems may need partial or total nail avulsion, or incisional surgery, which offers faster healing and prevents the nail from regrowing.

Lunula Laser procedure
After cleansing the skin, the nails are thinned if needed and the foot is placed in the Lunula Laser device for a 12-minute cycle of rotating red and blue light, then repeated on the other foot. Mild infections may need as few as 4 weekly sessions, while advanced cases may require more, with clear nail growth expected within three months.
