Summer is well underway, and many of us are spending more time in sandals, open-toed shoes, or even barefoot in the garden. That makes summer foot care more important than ever. But if your feet weren’t quite ready when the warmer weather arrived, you’re certainly not alone.
Dry skin, hard or rough areas, and neglected nails are all common at this time of year, and they’re exactly what we continue to see more of in the clinic.
Getting your feet in good condition for the rest of summer doesn’t need to be complicated, but a little consistency can make a big difference.
One of the most important places to start is with your skin. Dry, cracked heels are not just a cosmetic concern; they can become uncomfortable and, in some cases, lead to deeper splits. Using a good foot moisturiser regularly helps keep the skin supple and reduces the risk of cracking, especially if you’re more active outdoors.
Nail care is another key part of the process. Keeping nails trimmed, but not too short (and avoiding cutting down the sides), can help prevent issues like ingrown toenails, which can quickly become painful, particularly when wearing tighter summer footwear. If your nails are thickened, discoloured, or difficult to manage, it’s often best to have them assessed rather than trying to deal with them yourself.
As footwear choices change during summer, so does the support your feet need. Flip-flops and very flat sandals may be convenient, but they often offer very little cushioning or stability. This can lead to aching feet. Choosing sandals with a more supportive sole and secure fit can help keep you comfortable while still enjoying the lighter feel of summer footwear.
It’s also worth remembering that feet tend to be more exposed during the warmer months. This means they’re more at risk of cuts, blisters, and sun exposure. Keeping an eye on your skin, wearing appropriate footwear for different activities, and avoiding going barefoot in high-risk areas can help prevent unnecessary problems.
At Stepwise Footcare Podiatry Clinic, we believe that healthy feet are the foundation for enjoying everything summer has to offer.
Whether you’re spending time in the garden, heading off on holiday, enjoying long walks, or simply making the most of the sunshine, looking after your feet will help keep you comfortable all season long.
If your feet still aren’t feeling quite “summer ready,” or you’re noticing ongoing issues, getting advice early can make all the difference, so you can enjoy the rest of the season with confidence.
